Magic Sys Req Thinkpad

How to run Magic SysRq on a Lenovo ThinkPad that does not have the SysRq key

sysrq

I don’t know if you haveve ever needed to use the ‘Magic SysRq’ on a Thinkpad. It wasn’t until I needed to more or less ‘safely’ reboot a Thinpad Edge E330 that had crashed in a half-baked update, that I realised that the SysRq key doesn’t exist 😄

  • Press and hold the key Ctrl
  • Press and hold the key Alt
  • Press and hold the key Fn
  • Press and hold the key PrtSc
  • Release Fn
  • While Ctrl, Alt, y PrtSc are still down, press and release R
  • Still Ctrl, Alt, and PrtSc down, press and release the remaining keys of the word REISUB in order, with a couple of seconds between them: E I S U B.
  • The system should reboot
